Average review score:

U.S. History Re-ExplainedThere are many books on Juneteenth, but none so informative and accessible for both kids and adults as this one. Learn why the Emancipation Proclamation did not free any slaves and other things not often taught in school. Great book for anyone interested in United States history. Very colorful.

Juneteenth: Celebrating Freedom in Texas

Average review score:

A fun-filled glimpse into the pastA delightful story that explains that significance of Juneteenth from a child's perspective. The inquisitive nature and humor of the juvenile characters helps maintain an interesting storyline without sounding preachy. Kids will also enjoy the dialect and songs of the past. The addendum provides a glimpse of the author's unique heritage and chronicles an important era in African-American history. A chapter book treasure.

Know Your Rights
Published in Paperback by Gulf Publishing (15 January, 2000)
Average review score:

Easy to use and informativeThis book is divided into commonly used sections: property law, family law, etc. Each topic is then presented in specific question and answer form. It is nice that it specifically relates to Texas law, most books cover general US law and that is useless. Easy to understand and informative.

Land of Bright Promise : Advertising the Texas Panhandle and South Plains, 1870-1917
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Texas Press (June, 1988)
Average review score:

Whatever made you settle here?Frequently when a person travels through the Panhandle-South Plains region of Texas in the months of February or March, the question of how a person came to live in such a flat, dry area arises. Blodgett's _Land of Bright Promise: Advertising the Texas Panhandle and South Plains, 1870-1917_ very clearly explains how people were attracted to the region once the railroads were laid and the Indians were relegated to reservations. Even though the idea of cheap land was attraction enough, land companies and agents apparently provided a virtual blitz of advertising to sell the unsettled area. While the region is, indeed, beautiful when crops are in full bloom and clear blue skies are visible, survival here has not been easy. Jan Blodgett provides insight into what caused the area to be settled even though only the hardiest and persistent remained. While general readers may find the book a bit tedious, as a resident of Texas and historian, I love it and use it frequently for reference.
